Aïtos Protective ancestor totem from Timor (Indonesia) with crocodile effigy
Timorese totem poles were originally used to ward off evil spirits in the home by acting as protectors.
Erected in front of the house, these monumental statues are planted in the ground as soon as the dwelling is built, with the aim of warding off disease, demons and all manner of misfortune by embodying the spirit of mythical ancestors.
The Timorese revere crocodiles as their mythical ancestors and protectors.
Here, the totem is depicted with three crocodiles.
The column is an imposing 2.70m high.
