Aegyptiac Ointment - Pharmacy jar

From VERNIN Laboratories

Aegyptiac Ointment is a composition of white honey, strong vinegar and powdered verdet (hydrated copper acetate also called verdigris). The essential component of the ointment is hydrated copper acetate or "verdet" which has powerful antiseptic and astringent properties.

It is an escarotic ointment, i.e. caustic. It is used to clean and destroy diseased flesh. It helps to form healthy scar tissue.

Despite its name, this ointment does not originate from Egypt but from India.

Its formula would have been elaborated by the Gypsies originating from Punjab and Rajasthan who, during their peregrinations would have transmitted it orally in Europe as of the Middle Ages.

At that time, these nomadic people were supposed to have originated from Egypt, and were called "Egyptians" by deformation, after which appeared the terms Gypsies, Gypsies, Gitanos etc.

The name "Egyptian Ointment" comes from this historical-geographical confusion.
