Description

Amputation case - 19th-century wooden surgeon's case

From COLLIN & Cie, Paris, successors to the famous Maison Charrière from 1866.

The case's interior layout is original, with 2 levels and the amputation saw in the upper part.

The case contains several knives, scalpels, shears, an amputation saw, other tools and the Signoroni and Charrière mobile artery compression pad.

The set dates back to the 19th century, as the ebony guilloche handles on tools such as the saw for a better grip were no longer manufactured at Charrière in the 20th century. They were switched to all-metal or all-stainless-steel equipment after the discovery of the importance of hygiene and sterilization, as wood is a veritable hotbed of germs and bacteria of all kinds...

It was around the 1880s, when asepsis became essential thanks to Pasteur, that manufacturers abandoned ebony wood altogether in surgical instruments.

There are 3 empty slots, but otherwise the others are all marked COLLIN.

The box closes very well with the swivel fasteners.
