Haemoglobin was discovered in 1864 and a whole range of pharmaceutical products derived from haemoglobin appeared, to be taken as syrups, tablets, etc. to strengthen the body, ward off anaemia, etc. But it was also used to treat tuberculosis.
Haemoglobin was also used to treat tuberculosis, but this use disappeared after the Second World War with the advent of antibiotics.
The haemoglobin used came either from beef or horse as in this case.
This compound tended to disappear from the 1950s onwards, but was still present on a confidential basis until the 1990s-2000s.
Today, blood-derived medicinal products are made from human blood or plasma rather than animal blood or plasma.
